John Shearer: White Oak Cemetery-Related Information Sought

Thursday, April 20, 2017 - by John Shearer

For several years, Chattanoogan Sam Hall has been collecting old photos and other visual images about historic places in Chattanooga.

He then displays them at his website, deepzoomchattanoogan.com, using modern software and technology.

He said he recently acquired some pictures of high school-aged students and eventually determined they were students at Chattanooga “City” High when it was located in a former mayor’s wooden home from 1897-1904.

He also received some photos apparently connected to what was initially known as White Oak Cemetery, but is now Chattanooga Memorial Park by the duck pond on Memorial Drive.

One of the photos shows some people in front of a sign that says White Oak Cemetery. Other photos show hillsides that could be part of the park, while others have houses that may or may not be near the cemetery. All of the pictures – some of which are posted with this article -- also have people in them.

He said he is having trouble finding details about the pictures.

“The rest of the photos are connected by various clues, and I would very much like to confirm they all are from that area, and who the people are,” said Mr. Hall.

He thinks the people in one photo might be Hungarian Jewish immigrants, as one person is dressed like a rabbi.

He asks anyone who might know any information related to the photos to contact him at samhall@chattanoogatn.biz.

According to a 2010 chattanoogan.com article by Harmon Jolley, the Red Bank area cemetery was dedicated in 1895 and was originally called White Oak Cemetery.

The Hamilton County Commission just grouped a bunch of departments together in an attempt to reign in the CVB. I haven't spoken to any commissioners, but I truly believe it was unknowingly.
