U.S. 27 (I-124) widening from I-24/U.S. 27 interchange to north of the Olgiati Bridge over the Tennessee River, including widening the Olgiati Bridge: Work on this project continues. Weather permitting on Thursday the contractor will implement a temporary nighttime right lane closure on US-27 North from I-24 to the Olgiati Bridge, from 7 p.m.-6 a.m. During this time, the US-27 North off-ramp (Exit 1C) to 4th Street will be temporarily closed.  Traffic will be detoured using the US-27 North off-ramp (Exit 1B) to MLK Boulevard and then to Broad Street. Also, the West MLK Boulevard on-ramp to US-27 North will be temporarily closed, and traffic will be detoured using Chestnut Street to the 4th Street on-ramp to US-27 North. These changes will affect the on-ramp to US-27 North from MLK Boulevard, and the off-ramp (Exit 1C) from US 27 North to 4th Street. Traffic coming from downtown Chattanooga and using the on-ramp to US-27 North from MLK Boulevard will be required to come to a complete stop at the top of the ramp and will have a limited acceleration lane to merge on to the highway. Traffic wishing to access 4th Street at Exit 1C from US-27 North will now be directed to a new temporary exit ramp after crossing the 6th Street overpass. This new temporary exit ramp will be narrow and posted for 15 MPH. This new traffic pattern will be in place until this fall. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes due to the increased congestion between MLK Boulevard and 4th Street. The speed limit will continue to be posted for 35 MPH between Main Street and 4th Street on US 27 North. The speed limit on US 27 in the rest of the construction zone will remain 45 MPH. Motorists should exercise caution when traveling through the construction zone and pay close attention to the signage posted.
On Wednesday the contractor will implement a nighttime temporary left lane closure on Northbound US27 from I-24 to the Main Street overpass, from 7 p.m.-6 a.m., for setting bridge beams.
The contractor has closed the 12th Street tie-in ramp to U.S. 27 South. This closure will be in place until April. Traffic from 12th Street will be detoured to Carter Street and then to Westbound MLK where motorists may access the U.S. 27 South on-ramp. Detours are posted. Motorists should exercise caution when traveling through the construction zone and pay close attention to the detour signage posted.
Weather permitting, the contractor may implement temporary lane/shoulder closures on weeknights between the hours of 7 p.m.-6 a.m. At least one lane will remain open in each direction on U.S. 27. THP will assist with traffic control on the project as necessary. Restrictions: I 124 (US-27) Northbound Exit 1C 4th Street Off Ramp. No oversize/over-dimensional loads. Width Limit is 11 feet. Estimated project completion date is January 2020.
