Mayor Berke Launches Blackboard Bonuses To Show Teachers Appreciation

Thursday, March 22, 2018

"Maybe you’ve had enough apples for now -- it’s time for something you actually enjoy." That’s the idea behind Blackboard Bonuses, a new program launched by Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke’s office during this year’s public school spring break.

Local shops and restaurants are being asked to offer discounts and other incentives to any teacher who shows his or her Hamilton County Department of Education identification card during the district’s spring break week, April 2-6.

"Educators are among the hardest working and most dedicated members of our community, and the work they do every day is demanding and important in so many ways,” said Mayor Berke. “We want them to know how much they are valued and also invite them to enjoy their city in some new ways. The ‘Blackboard Bonuses’ program is hopefully the beginning a new tradition and a fun way the whole city can celebrate a successful school year.”

So far, almost three dozen local businesses have signed up to be “Blackboard Bonuses Business Partners.” Local businesses that are interested in joining the program should do so at connect.chattanooga.gov/blackboardbonuses to sign up March 28. Teachers who utilize the discounts are encouraged to post about their experiences to social media with the hashtag #TurnUpForTeachers.

Arming Teachers With Guns Will Be Too Dangerous - And Response (4)

Arming teachers with guns in the classroom, as Bill Lee proposes, would be the single most dangerous thing to happen to students in Tennessee history. Students and teachers in close proximity to loaded firearms daily? Across this state, in middle schools alone, there are probably hundreds of student/teacher conflicts a day. What if a student got hold of gun in a struggle with ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Scream ‘Sexual Assault!’

Candace Owens, a communications director for the conservative non-profit “Turning Point,” wasted not a minute’s time as the Democratic debauchery of Supreme Court appointee Brett Kavanaugh raced like a prairie fire across America. There is little doubt that many politicians -- on either side of the aisle -- play a little loose with the truth. But this Eleventh Hour attack on the ... (click for more)
