Roy Exum: UnifiEd’s Shameful Lie

When two seated members of the Hamilton County School Board joined a growing circle of those who doubt the true intentions of the non-profit organization UnifiEd on Friday, the snowflakes quickly countered that Joe Smith and Rhonda Thurman were against “integration.” That, brothers and sisters, is the most outlandish lie that has been told this deep into the year 2018.

We’ve all grown sick and tired of “the race card,” which comes flipping out of the liberals’ deck any time they are questioned or doubted about any and everything. Smith, Thurman and what appears to be hundreds of others have had darn-near enough of UnifiEd and there is absolutely no one against integration at all. The truth: Hamilton County schools are already integrated and Smith, Thurman – and UnifiEd – have had a sum total of zero to do with it.

I am not a liberal but where the rub comes is when the liberals try to make ‘integration’ into ‘equity.’ It hasn’t worked since before the Bible was written. Integration is where every kid has the same chance no matter of skin color, zip code, or poverty level. Equity means everybody has the same everything but life has never, nor will ever, work that way. Better put, every elite’s kids go to private schools.

In life, ‘fair’ is a place you take your prized pig in the summertime. Read the Bible, you’ll see. You’ll also see where ‘elite liberals’ want to make the rules for everybody else and have everybody else pay the freight. It will never, ever happen – not in anything at all -- until you get to heaven and, until then, faith is the only possible tool that will hold such a promise. No two people in the world are equal. We were not created that way.

Here’s what REALLY just happened: When UnifiEd’s “political action committee” used Lookout Mountain money and gullible high school children to get Greg Beck rolled off the County Commission in the May 1 primary, that deed ain’t exactly ‘Hoyle’ in the eyes of the overwhelming majority of good and decent people in our community. And that’s REALLY why every “unbought” elected official in Hamilton County loathes UnifiEd and their misguided souls who swarm in a frenzy with about as much welcome as fruit flies at a church picnic.

Two years ago “the liberal elite” did the same thing to defeat the highly-respected school board chairman Jonathan Welch, as well as board members George Ricks and Donna Horn. The ‘elite’ also gave a big chunk of cash to Patti Skates in hopes she would beat Thurman but Rhonda is not only popular, she’s the school board’s brightest star. So here’s another REAL truth: Rhonda still remembers what the ‘elite’ tried to do to her and Smith is so ethical and honest, he’s developed a keen nose for under-handed people.

Look what happened in 2016: When campaign finances were disclosed, Skates had raised $12,235 to Rhonda’s $6,728. Kathy Lennon had raised $12,890 to Welch’s $137 Joe Wingate had raised $14,415 to Horn’s $1,996, and Tiffanie Robinson raised over $23,646 more than Ricks. Not a one have the pockets for such an ante and, when a school board member is paid just over $12,000 a year, somebody’s gonna’ smell the mouse.

Paul Brock, a spokesman for the ‘elites,’ explained at the time, “I am sure the current board is well-intentioned, but the results are not there. Leadership matters and that’s why I am working really hard to get some change on the school board.”

In other words, there are no other words necessary. The “liberal elite” bought three out of four school board seats two years ago and now they are at it again, as evidenced by what just happened to the blind-sided Greg Beck. He stands head-and-shoulders over the elected Katherlyn Geter and everybody in Chattanooga knows it, save the “liberal elite.”

Yes, the UnifiEd crowd just canned Greg Beck, who has done more for District 5 than any man alive. Geter doesn’t even live in the district and, so help me, I can’t begin to connect the dots. Yet there is this: Geter is said to have jumped into politics at the urging of the Rev. Ternae Jordan, her pastor at the Mount Canaan Baptist Church. Eight montns ago she and Rev. Jordan appeared at the county offices asking about how to get their hands on discretionary money. A short time later, lo and behold Ms. Geter was on the ballot though she is outside the district. It is believed Rev. Jordan is eager to seek Hamilton County’s involvement in perhaps a health clinic at his church

Rev. Jordan, who drives a slick Mercedes and lives near Claude Ramsey in some $600K manse at Eagles Bluff, came to Chatttanooga from Fort Wayne, Ind., where he founded an anti-violence group called ‘Stop the Madness.’ He quickly affiliated with the city of Chattanooga when Ron Littlefield was Mayor but was abruptly unaffiliated some time later.

Two weeks ago, Rev. Jordan, his wife, and some of his children were among a record number of 50 UnifiEd poll watchers - those who can call out a known Republican voting in the Democratic primary or a Democrat trying to swing an election with a carefully-stacked Republican ballot. In the past poll watchers have been from one party keeping an eye on the other. With the UnifiEd bunch in the game, it is now poll watchers often keeping an eye on the candidate of the same party who has not gotten the blessing of UnifiEd, filled out their questionnaires, or sat through their interview process.

The UnifiEd poll watchers were so into their role that in four of the District 5 precincts they noticed that the chief poll worker had not printed out the results at the end of the day. This sometimes happens when workers are tired and ready to go home after a long day. It's not an essential part of the counting process. But the UnifiEd people got on the phone to election administrator Kerry Steelman, who advised them to get in their cars and follow the ballots to the election office. Oh yes, UnifiEd is very involved in our local elections.

Geter listed two donations from the UnifiEd PAC on her recent financial disclosures, one for $2,368.25 and another for $1,010. Happenstance, you think? UnifiEd also provided robocalls against Beck, but why after what Greg has done for the Democratic Party in Hamilton County?

And now Ms. Geter has gotten elected and has her marching orders - (1) follow the UnifiEd line and (2) gets some government money for Rev. Jordan and his family.

More smoke and mirrors: UnifiED’s so-called “Apex Project” is no more than cannon fodder. You get a bunch of liberals and make them feel important so they’ll donate operating cash. It’s all for show, except they want sane people to finance their screwy ideas. Every valid point in the APEX report we have been talking about for years. Please.

But what is even better came just hours after the “unbought” school board members harpooned UnifiED with the press release. Here’s the shameless cash call that was immediately emailed from headquarters:

THE URGENT EMAIL FROM UnifiEd ON FRIDAY

“You know the day is coming, but you're never 100% sure when. Well friends, today is that day.

“Today Joe Smith and Rhonda Thurman published a press release opposing integration of Hamilton County schools.

“Read it here: Two Hamilton Co. School Board members say they reject idea of racial, economic integration” (press release was attached which clearly said no such thing.)

“It's 2018. This is unacceptable. This is dangerous. This is hateful.

“We need your help to fight this. Spread this story far and wide. Tell your friends, family, and your community that this is NOT what you want for Hamilton County.

“And if you can, please donate. We need your help to continue fighting against this injustice and the rhetoric that fuels it.

“Donate to UnifiEd”

Dangerous? Hateful? Rhonda and Joe? The only thing dangerous and hateful is the poison that comes from the UnifiEd camp. The debates are being sponsored by the biggest four liberal groups in town --UnifiEd, Chattanooga 2.0, The Urban League, and the teacher’s union – and, in fact, are as phony as the “elite liberals” thinking anyone in this community cares to hear who they endorse for office.

Think about this: If UnifiEd suddenly went ‘poof’ and disappeared, how long you reckon you would miss the fruit flies at the picnic?

Roy Exum: No Cell Phones Allowed

There was a time, not so long ago, when school-aged children would learn lessons from a prescribed text, such as a textbook. Today texting is far, far different and, as any of our teachers will tell us, cell phones have become the scourge of education. In almost every classroom, kids will silently text in the shadow of the desk in front of them rather than focus on the lesson. Yet ... (click for more)
